You’ve just brought home your brand new shiny printer and you can’t wait to get started. You’ve followed all the instructions but it still won’t work? Here’s some help if your USB printer won’t connect…

How to Connect my Printer to My Laptop

Windows:

  • Firstly plug in your printer at the mains.
  •  With the printer switched off, connect it to your laptop using the USB cable.
  • Turn on your Laptop and it will now detect a new device.
  • The laptop will now Install the device (printer’s) driver software.
  • A message should appear that the printer driver software has installed successfully.
  • Now go to the Start menu at the bottom left-hand side of the screen, click control panel, and then scroll to ‘printers’.
  • The printer – Canon Pixma mg3650 – for example, should now appear here which shows that it has connected correctly.
  • Lastly, you can right-click the printer and select ‘properties’, then print the test page.

Mac:

  • With the printer switched off, connect it to your Mac laptop using the USB cable.
  • Turn on your Mac and it will now detect a new device.
  • The Mac will now Install the device (printer’s) driver software.
  • A notification should appear that the printer’s driver software has installed successfully.
  • Go to System Preferences, Printers and Scanners to check that it appears installed.

What if it Doesn’t Install?

In a case where the laptop cannot find and install the printer’s driver software, you may need to find it yourself.

  • Go to the printer manufacturers website e.g. Canon or Dell.
  • Find ‘drivers’ or ‘download drivers’.
  • Now type in product name or code.
  • Select your operating system such as Windows 10 or mac OS Sierra.
  • Download and install the relevant software then reconnect your printer and try again.
